A fine violin by the Silvestre Frères in an excellent state of preservation. The sound is dark and powerful with an even tone throughout the range, typical of a violin from the golden-age of French violin making.
Pierre Silvestre, (1801-1859), began his career apprenticing under Blaise in Mirecourt before moving to Paris to work alongside Lupot and Gand. By 1829, he had established his own workshop in Lyon. His brother, Hippolyte, joined him in 1831, and together they operated under the name Silvestre Frères until 1848. Pierre was the leading artisan in their partnership, renowned for very fine Stradivari, Guarneri, and Amati copies, reminiscent of Vuillaume's style. These instruments were characterised by their large yet harmonious proportions and meticulous attention to detail. He selected only the finest materials and applied varnish with a rich texture and colour that suited each piece perfectly.
