    About this Instrument

    About this Bow

Carlo Antonio Testore | Milan, circa 1730-1740
A Fine and Rare Italian Cello

This exceptional cello, attributed to Carlo Antonio Testore, represents a quintessential example of the Milanese master’s craftsmanship, dating from approximately 1730-1740. The instrument embodies Testore’s pragmatic yet masterful approach to lutherie, displaying both the distinctive tonal depth and robust character for which his cellos are revered.

The back, crafted from two pieces of maple cut on the slab, is notably plain, with narrow, faint flames that become more apparent toward the flanks, accented by occasional knot effects. The table, in two pieces of finely grained pine, features original wings in the lower bouts. The cello’s golden yellow varnish has aged gracefully, providing a warm, luminous patina that enhances its elegant simplicity.

The scroll, though not original, was most likely added in France toward the end of the 18th century. It has been sensitively reduced in size, making it highly playable without compromising its rich tonal qualities.

Tonally, this cello excels, producing a noble and powerful sound. The C string offers a profound depth that resonates with warmth and authority, while the A string maintains a remarkable projection—an uncommon balance for instruments of this period and size. It is this unique combination of resonance and clarity that makes this cello a highly desirable example of Testore’s work, suitable for both professional soloists and discerning collectors alike.

A rare opportunity to acquire an important piece from one of the most respected makers of the Testore family, this cello offers a blend of historical significance and superb tonal performance, embodying the very best of Milanese instrument making.
