Carlo Antonio Testore is a name that needs no introduction; he perfectly encapsulates the best of Milanese making. The violin is very typical of his work and made in his later period, in 1759, as indicated on the label and branded internally on the back with the maker's "double-eagle" stamp.
The back, crafted from two pieces of plain maple cut on the quarter, features the usual inked purfling as well as feature drawn flames at the flanks and mid bouts. The ribs are made of wood similar to the back.
The table, in two pieces of narrow grained spruce in the centre, widening towards the flanks. The varnish is of a beautiful dark golden brown colour.
This violin is a fantastic example of Testore’s craftsmanship, offering a sound that is both powerful and beautifully balanced. The lower registers have a rich, warm resonance that is full of character, while the E string shines with impressive projection and clarity. It is rare to find an instrument from this period that combines such depth with brightness so effortlessly, making it a joy to play in both solo and ensemble settings. The tone is refined yet commanding, with a versatility that will appeal to professional musicians and collectors alike. Whether on stage or in a collection, this violin stands out as a truly special piece.
The violin represents a rare opportunity to acquire an important work from one of the most respected makers of the Testore family.
