This cello is a distinguished piece by Jean Baptiste Vuillaume, one of the most celebrated French luthiers of the 19th century. Originating from his Paris workshop on rue Croix des Petits-Champs, this instrument carries Vuillaume's hallmark of excellence, as evidenced by its original label, serial number 1764, and the maker's own signature—all found on the interior of the back. Dating back to 1847, this cello is a notable example of Vuillaume's mid-19th-century work.
The acoustic quality of this instrument is nothing short of extraordinary, with a clarity and focus of sound that projects with remarkable strength. The A string sings with an almost limitless palette, while the balance and evenness across all strings, down to the C string, ensure a sound of unparalleled purity and richness, even in the most demanding lower registers.
The back of the cello is crafted from two pieces of maple cut on the quarter, showcasing irregular flames of narrow to medium width that descend slightly from the center joint. This selection of wood is not just aesthetically pleasing with its unique flame patterns but also contributes to the rich and complex sound for which Vuillaume's cellos are known. The sides of the cello are made from similarly flamed maple, providing a cohesive look and sound resonance, while the scroll is crafted from wood similar to that of the back, completing the instrument's elegant design.
The front, or table, of the cello is constructed from two pieces of spruce of generally broad grain, becoming slightly finer on the treble flank. Over this, an orange-brown varnish on a lighter ground not only protects the wood but adds a lustrous finish that highlights the natural beauty of the materials.
With a body length of 75.6 cm and widths of 34.2 cm at the upper bout and 43.6 cm at the lower bout, this cello is robust and designed for a powerful, resonant sound. It is a fine example of Vuillaume's craftsmanship and it has been very well preserved.
